What is DISC and Why I Love It

As a life coach DISC is one of my must-have go-to’s when working with clients. DISC is an assessment tool designed to help individuals, teams or organizations to become more successful by providing practical and easy-to-understand insights into our innate personality. As one of Her Nexx Chapter’s newest experts, I will be using this behavioral assessment tool with my clients. I’m so passionate about DISC because it allows us to become more self-aware by identifying strengths and uncovering blindspots in a non-judgmental way.

DISC gives clients a new framework for understanding themselves and others by identifying individuals as either people-oriented or task-oriented, outgoing and faster-paced or reserved and more moderately paced. Once a client understands where they fit in the model, then they can better assess where others fit and act accordingly. The best part of this tool, aside from its practicality and user-friendly aspects, is that DISC creates over 40 personality blends of the 4 main personality types; D-style (Dominance), I-style (Influence), S-style (Steadiness), C-style (Correctness). To break these styles down further the D-style personality is task-oriented and active, I-style is people-oriented and active, S-style is people-oriented and reserved, and the C-style is task-oriented and reserved. A high D style, for example, could easily clash with a high C style if one of them doesn’t slow down or speed up their pace. So, the most successful person isn’t any one particular DISC style, but the one who becomes self-aware and learns to adjust to the needs and temperament of others.

Looking at ourselves and one another through DISC helps to reframe our interactions. I believe it is extremely important for people to be able to take a good hard look at themselves without feeling intimidated or ashamed of the outcome! Your DISC style doesn’t put you in a box or limit how successful you can be, but rather it predicts how you prefer to interact, work, communicate, influence and motivate others allowing you to understand HOW to reach your goals. The best personality styles are the ones who put their energy towards being better not only for their co-workers or business but for themselves!
