Get Fit Without Joining a Gym

Say “fitness,” and many people instantly think “gym.” But gym membership isn’t practical for all of us. I live several miles out of town, and I don’t enjoy sweating in front of a roomful of people anyway. So I found other ways to stay fit, and you can too. Here’s how:

Walk or Run

These fitness options are affordable, accessible, and burn lots of calories. I take brisk walks around my neighborhood almost every day. If you can’t get outside, take advantage of indoor spaces like malls or community centers. Be careful—start gradually, stay hydrated, and be mindful of your safety.

Bring the Gym Home

I’ve worn out two stationery bikes. Treadmills are another great option. (Plant one in front of the TV!) If space is tight, try mini trampolines, jump ropes, and workout videos.

Get Help From a Pro

A good personal trainer isn’t free, but your investment can pay off for years. I’ve learned many skills and tips from trainers that I still use on my own today. Most trainers offer group or partner sessions to reduce costs.

Get a Boost from Technology

You’re looking at a first-class fitness tool right now. You can use your phone or computer to play your favorite workout music, get support to help you reach your fitness goals, and much more. I track my steps with a built-in app on my phone. Whatever your own goals and needs are, there’s an app for that, too.

Make Health and Fitness a Lifestyle

I’m typing this article at my sort-of-standup desk (a laptop on a file cabinet). I meditated and took a walk before I started, and later I’ll do some stretches. A gym membership only helps when we show up. Healthy habits help us all day long, every single day.

Gyms are a great place to get fit. But you can work toward your fitness goals right now, whether or not you choose to join.
