According to legend, townspeople fed Napoleon and his army a giant omelet during their stay in Bessières, France. This event inspired that same town to create the giant omelet festival, celebrated annually for the past half-century. The festivities last for three days around Easter and conclude by serving thousands of festival-goers a portion of a gigantic omelet cooked by a team of chefs in an enormous pan. The festival brings people from all over the world together and has inspired similar Giant Omelette celebrations in New Caledonia, Louisiana, and Quebec, to list a few.

Symbolism and Cultural Significance

Eggs hold symbolic significance across cultures, commonly symbolizing life, rebirth, and fertility. They mark the reawakening and renewal of nature for the spring equinox and represent resurrection for Easter. Creation stories, such as Chinese, Greek, Egyptian, Hindu, and Japanese, illustrate how the cosmos hatched from an egg. Ostrich eggs are positioned in burial grounds and places of worship across North Africa and the Middle East. Eggs are believed to have protective and cleansing properties in Central American and Mexican traditions and are handsomely decorated in Eastern European cultures, especially Slavic. Eggs can further bring us together through their shared sacred significance.

  • Frittata – A frittata is an Italian egg bake similar to a crustless quiche or an unfolded omelet and is just as customizable. The ingredients are combined with whisked eggs in a pan or baking dish and popped into the oven.

Whether the recipe originated in Rome, Persia, or medieval France is still being determined. Many cultures may have learned long ago that cracking eggs over various ingredients is egg-tastic.
  • Quiche – Imagine all possible combinations for an omelet poured into a flaky pie crust, and you have a quiche. The most well-known styles of this savory French tart are Quiche Lorraine, which contains bacon and cheese, and Quiche Florentine, which includes spinach and cheese, but the possibilities are endless.
  • Shakshuka – Also spelled shakshouka, it means “mixed” in a dialect of Arabic and originated in North Africa. This popular one-pot dish comprises poached eggs in spiced tomato sauce, including garlic, onion, and peppers. Shakshuka can be enjoyed at any time of day.
  • Tamagoyaki – This centuries-old Japanese dish is made by continuously rolling thin layers of scrambled eggs over itself like tree rings. It is traditionally cooked in a rectangular pan. The word tamagoyaki roughly translates to “grilled egg.”
  • Tomato Egg Stir Fry – This everyday Chinese meal tosses scrambled eggs with fresh tomato over a bed of rice. A touch of sesame oil, sugar, and rice wine gives a burst of flavor to this delectable dish. This simple meal comes together quickly for an easy weeknight dinner.
