The holiday season has officially begun, and as much joy as this time of year can bring, it can also be particularly chaotic. Chaos is an intrinsic part of life that we often wish to avoid, such as long traffic jams and wretched weather. But without chaos, life would be boring and monotonous. Chaos is what makes every day different and full of infinite possibilities. If life were constantly orderly and predictable, we would be stuck in limbo. Embrace the chaotic nature of life and relax into knowing that there’s only so much we can control.
You’ve probably heard of the Butterfly Effect, the theory in which the most minor change can result in drastic consequences. Meteorologist Edward Lorenz coined the term in the ‘60s after he found that inputting subtle changes into weather models produced unpredictably volatile results. This observation raised the philosophical question, “Does the flap of a butterfly’s wings in Brazil cause a tornado in Texas?” Although a butterfly’s wings probably don’t cause Mothra-like storms, this question articulates that even the most inconspicuous occurrence can contribute to unforeseen significant outcomes. Order and chaos are interdependent and one cannot exist without the other.
We see the butterfly effect in mainstream media all the time. Our favorite stories captivate us because of the events that unfold in response to the decisions characters make or don’t make. Perhaps you’re familiar with Ray Bradbury’s short story “A Sound of Thunder,” where a man signs up for a prehistoric hunting expedition but accidentally steps on a butterfly while he’s in the past, altering the future to an unrecognizable degree. This story demonstrates that everything in the past has led you to where and who you are today. It also warns us that we cannot easily determine what could have been different to change our present circumstances.
Then, there’s the necessary chaos involved in any of our favorite stories. The hero’s journey, for instance, requires the protagonist to complete nearly impossible tasks to reach their full potential, atone for their mistakes, or save the world from destruction, like the 12 Labors of Hercules or the Fellowship’s quest to destroy the One Ring. From epics to novels and films, we learn that to become the best versions of ourselves, we must overcome whatever life throws at us with courage, determination, and discernment.
The inherent role of chaos in our lives beckons us to embrace the unplanned ebbs and flows of our life’s trajectory. Instead of resisting unexpected plot twists, interpret roadblocks as learning opportunities in your life’s story. Take a deep breath and a step back when things don’t go as planned. Try turning those lemons into lemonade. Remind yourself that everything is temporary, and all we have is the present moment and what we decide to do with it.
Embracing the unpredictable mystery of the future prepares us for the unexpected. We become more flexible, tolerant, and adaptive to change when we accept that we cannot control everything. When the journey gets chaotic, will you turn around and find an easier path, or will you forge ahead and discover that the disruptive hiccups were nudging you in the right direction all along?
