Why Purpose is the Ultimate New Year’s Resolution

Hello 2025, dear reader,

I’ll be honest—it’s been a while since I’ve written. 2024 was a whirlwind, and here’s why. I finally published my book, Butterfly Crescendo.

What started as a way to document my experiences since COVID turned into something much deeper: A story about me, by me. I had been volunteering with Her Nexx Chapter for over a year before publishing my book, writing consistent short stories that eventually inspired an even longer and more elaborate book. The courage to share personal stories blossomed into the pages of Butterfly Crescendo. The entire experience was exhilarating because it was mine—my thoughts, my lens, and my voice.

As a young person navigating the journey of self-discovery and purpose, writing about what it means to be me felt empowering. There’s a unique joy in creating something that moves or impacts another person. That feeling is why I’m inspired to write another book and, if God allows, even produce a film one day.

For this article, I want to talk about purpose.

I’ve been reading Soul Cravings by Erwin Raphael McManus—a phenomenal writer and an even better storyteller. A friend gifted me the book after reading mine, continuing their belief in “a book for a book.” McManus writes about God-given purpose and what destiny truly feels like. He reminds us that we all long to create, even when we’re not exactly sure what.

He describes that innate feeling—the one that keeps you awake at night until a task is done or wakes you up early because you can’t wait to start. It’s what people call purpose-driven work.

But here’s the truth: Your purpose might not come from your 9-to-5 job or even from the business you started. Still, you owe it to yourself to search for it.

McManus writes: “We humans are most alive when we passionately pursue our dreams, live with purpose, and have a sense of destiny.”

So, I’ll ask you—have you identified your purpose? There’s no better time to reflect on this than at the start of a new year. Are you truly where you’re meant to be? What’s the point of life if you can’t answer that?

I genuinely believe we all have a purpose, crafted by God long before we were conceived. It’s a purpose that transcends time and space, waiting for us to embrace it.

The truth is, I didn’t always see myself as a writer. Writing felt like something reserved for “bigger” people—those with a grander vocabulary, advanced degrees, or years of experience in storytelling. But we all have to start somewhere.

In 1995, with $28,000 borrowed from their father, Elon Musk and his brother created Zip2, an online city guide licensed to newspapers. I doubt Elon could’ve envisioned the incredible future awaiting him, but pursuing purpose one step at a time often leads to extraordinary outcomes.

So, this year, let’s focus on living with intention. Let’s aim to achieve goals far greater than we can currently imagine—goals that align with the unique purpose God placed within us.

Here’s to 2025 and all the purpose-driven moments it has in store.

PS: If you’re interested in purchasing Butterfly Crescendo, you can find it here in paperback or as an e-book.
