April is Poetry Appreciation Month, which means there is an opportunity for haiku poetry to be celebrated during this poetic season. What is the significance of National Haiku Poetry Day? Haiku is a Japanese style of poetry with only three lines and five syllables. Haiku poetry is a work of art for Poetry Appreciation Month. It takes time to practice haiku since some writers are not used to writing poetry with only three lines and a few syllables. Practice makes perfect for haiku poetry.

If the poetry has more than three lines and five syllables, it is not classified as haiku. A haiku sticks to a format with a 5-7-5 rule for poetry. The first and third lines should have 5 syllables while the second line should have 7 syllables. Again, a haiku should have only three lines. Haiku is a complex poetry for Western poets because it sticks to the Japanese style of poetries. Haiku has strict guidelines and expectations for all poets. To write a haiku, it must have a concise meaning with powerful imagery. Here are some examples.

Writing a haiku is easier than you think. It only requires three lines with 17 syllables total. Haiku requires practice, but it does not have to be perfect. As long as you stick to the haiku guidelines, you can write simple poetry with imagery that makes an impact!
