WHAT ARE FIBROIDS?
Fibroids are non-malignant tumors that exist within or on the uterus. Known to develop from the smooth muscular tissue of the womb, fibroids can grow slowly or in some cases quickly, or they may simply stay the same size. However, if fibroids grow too large, they may start causing painful and life-altering symptoms.
WHO CAN GET FIBROIDS?
Fibroids are very common especially among Black women as if for some reason we’ve been cursed with this intruder. As many as 3 out of 4 women will develop fibroids during their lifetime. Most are unaware they have them. Sometimes, doctors will accidentally discover fibroids during a routine pelvic or pregnancy exam, but there are symptoms and signs such as extremely heavy, prolonged menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain and pressure, and frequent urination. Fibroid tumors can press on a woman’s bladder and cause her to feel the urge to urinate more frequently than normal. She may experience lower backache or pain in her legs, or issues such as pain during sex, constipation, abnormal vaginal discharge or difficulty urinating.
