Beginning in 1911, March 8 has been known as “International Women’s Day,” but long before this date women have been making history. In observance of International Women’s Day, March has been named Women’s History Month. Historically, women have been the foundation of innumerable global achievements that have allowed us to develop into the high-caliber society we have today.
Countless women deserve recognition for their attributes to the world. One of these is Molly Ludwig Hays. More famously she is known as Molly Pitcher, remembered for her nurturing nature at the Battle of Monmouth in June of 1778. During this battle she supplied soldiers with spring water from her pitcher, hence the name Molly Pitcher. Her compassionate actions didn’t stop there; she took the place of a fallen soldier at a cannon and continued to “swab and load” it. In commemoration of her courage, General Washington issued her a warrant as a non commissioned officer and she gained the nickname “Sergeant Molly.”
Another woman who drastically improved humanity, more specifically through the practice of medicine, is Florence Nightingale. Born on May 12, 1820, she was a British social reformer who founded modern nursing. After volunteering to help in the Crimean war by tending to the wounded soldiers, she tried to bring changes to the hygiene problems of Army hospitals. Through requiring basic necessities like bathing, clean clothing, and adequate food, Nightingale established a higher standard of care. Because of her tireless efforts, she was the first woman awarded the Order of Merit. International Nurses Day is observed on her birthday in celebration of her role.
Numerous women in history deserve acknowledgment and celebration but it’s also important to recognize the unsung heroes of humanity: our mothers. Their constant sacrifice and devotion to not only their children but the world have allowed those impacted by their love to thrive. In honor of Women’s History Month let’s take a moment to say “thank you” and “I love you” to those who have motivated and supported us since the beginning. Historically, women both inside and outside the home have enhanced our world; Women’s History Month is for them.
