The Gift of Friends – It’s International Day of Friendship!

Jul 30, 2019 | 4 comments

Friends are an essential part of our lives, no wonder many of our favorite memories are tied to times spent with friends. Friendship is a relationship based on mutual affection and a bond between people and its importance in our world is immeasurable. Friends have a great influence on our behaviors and beliefs: they boost our confidence and self-esteem; they improve our sense of belonging and purpose; they serve as robust pillars of support during hard or uncertain times.

Having someone to talk to and connect with on a deeper level, someone with whom you can laugh or cry, someone you can trust with secrets, someone to celebrate your life’s successes and special moments, someone on whose shoulders you can weep, someone who will listen to you without judging you, someone who is not afraid to tell you the truth and someone who accepts you the way you are and gives room for your improvement by supporting you all the way, makes the world a perfect haven and increases our happiness quotient.

The first Friendship Day was invented in the year 1930 by Hallmark greeting card founder, Joyce Hall, but the invention did not see the light of the day as most people perceived it to be a marketing tactic. However, in 1958, Ramon Artemio initiated the concept of World Friendship Day in Puerto Pinasco, a town in Paraguay and this started the celebration on the 30th of July. From Paraguay, the United Nations learned of it and International Day of Friendship was born and adopted by the whole world.

International Day of Friendship gives the opportunity to celebrate friends. You can take the initiative! Plan to spend some time with your friends and choose some activities, send thoughtful, lovely notes and messages or throw a small dinner, party or get together. You will be glad you did!

Albert Schweitzer said, “In everyone’s life, at some time, our inner fire goes out. It is then burst into flame by an encounter with another human being. We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit.”
