Growing up I would watch my mother attend yoga classes, do morning and night meditation sessions, and preach almost religiously about wellness to those around her.
Considering it to be too time-consuming to practice in my life, it was not till I was much older did I realize that wellness was simply the process of becoming actively aware of and making choices toward a healthy and fulfilling life. It is more than being free from illness; it is about the attempt to constantly better one’s self. It includes maintaining a positive outlook on one’s mind, body, and soul.
But what are the exact steps one must take to achieve wellness?
It is helpful to divide wellness into several categories: emotional, physical, and social. While there may be others, these three are the main components key to maintaining an overall healthy lifestyle.
The first type is emotional wellness, which has to do with your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is necessary to be attentive to both one’s positive and negative feelings, as well as to understand how to deal with them. Having an optimistic approach to life, practicing staying in the moment, getting enough sleep, managing stress correctly, smiling as much as possible, and reaching out for professional support if necessary are all ways to improve one’s emotional wellness.
The second type is physical wellness, involving conscious efforts to keep one’s body physically healthy. It can be achieved through the consumption of a well-balanced diet, exercising for at least 30 minutes a day, practicing safe sex, eating breakfast every day, and scheduling at least biannual physical exams with a medical professional.
The final subcategory of wellness consists of one’s interactions with others. Social wellness is the ability to build lasting relationships with others. To improve one’s social wellness, one should schedule time with family, start new relationships, practice good listening skills, and refrain from judging another.
No matter how occupied I am with other affairs, I always make a conscious effort to practice wellness to maintain a higher quality of life in these small ways, just like my mother before me.
