Today is World Children’s Day. The day when children are celebrated everywhere irrespective of social status, color, language, and gender. If I ask someone, “What was the best part of your life so far?” 9 out of 10 people will say “childhood,” and it’s true to every word. Children, to put it simply, are very pure at heart. This is the age when it’s encouraged to ask questions, play in the dirt, try out new foods and many other different things, which we as adults forget or are hesitant to do.
Having a toddler of my own, I am surprised by the way he thinks, how he talks, and how he picks up emotions. His questions are never-ending. Why is the sky blue? Why is it raining? Why are the fishes in the water all time? What will happen to the tree if the roots are removed? The questions go on and on, and that is how he is understanding the world.
The wonderful part of childhood is finding happiness in the small things. Packing his toys in the shabby Amazon box and pretending it is a gift or just taking a drive down to the local store to buy bread, gives him immense happiness.
Children have vivid imaginations. It is with this in mind that we can enhance their learning. In his class, during the mathematics hour, he relates everything to dinosaurs, as those are his obsession currently. We should always encourage children to have wild imaginations as it helps in their discovery and in those lessons.
