Women. Most of us know that women are crucial to the survival of civilization. Women carry and give life. We give of ourselves until we cannot give anymore. Women nurture and nest and provide for our families. But not so long ago, a women’s role was defined by others. Throughout history women and girls have been relegated to what our fathers and husbands decided for our lives. Not long ago a woman could not qualify for her own credit card, let alone a mortgage or a car note. Not long ago, women had to ask permission to do simple tasks, like driving or opening up a bank account, even having their own money, and in some places, these rules still exist. Permission is still needed for a woman to do the simplest of tasks. But why are women’s roles so important besides the obvious?
Women create, we nurture, we love, we provide safe spaces for our family, for our children. You’ve heard the saying, “Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day but teach him how to fish and he will eat for a lifetime.” Women are now allowed to “learn how to fish.” We are now defining who we want to be without the parameters of someone else telling us how. Women are not yet equal, as most of us still get paid 82 cents for every dollar a man makes, but we are making strides. Women are making leaps and bounds in carving our place in society, and we are doing it with grace and determination.
Women today are freer to create the role of who they want to be, whether that’s being a stay-at home mom or entering the workforce, being in a heterosexual relationship or being in the LGBTA+ community. We as women now have more choices than ever before. Instead of defining ourselves by what we do for a profession or how many children we have, let’s start defining our roles in our universe by how kind we are, how giving we are, how well we prioritize self-care – all of the things that make women the amazing creatures we are.
