Recognizing the Vitality of Self-Expression on International Artists’ Day

Oct 25, 2021 | 0 comments

When you think of art, surely you think of the art from ages gone by. Famous names like Leonardo Da Vinci or Michelangelo pop into your mind. Or perhaps artists from not so long ago come to mind, like Vincent van Gogh or Pablo Picasso. What about the new contemporary artists from today? Well, Monday, October 25 is just the day to celebrate all artists. It’s International Artists’ Day! The purpose of this fun day is to recognize the amazing contributions that artists make to our culture and society.

For thousands of years, people have been making art. From cave drawings to pottery, paintings to sculptures, researchers have discovered these lost artifacts and used them to identify the people who created them. Their art tells us about their cultures, what they believed in, folklore, and even the vegetation that existed at the time. Without these vital artworks from the past, we wouldn’t be able to know as much as we do about our own human existence.

Art can often be pushed aside or dismissed as meaningless and unimportant. People often don’t see it as a career anymore, and it may not be considered as a clear path to success. But the importance of creating art has a much greater reach than just financial, and we mustn’t lose sight of that.

Artists and their work are integral to capturing and preserving our culture. They’re essential to vitalizing and often re-vitalizing our culture. Art may often be seen as self-expression or a societal critique by the artist. Be it negative or positive portrayals of life, art shares our human story of today. It is important to not overlook the significant impact art has made.

So, join in on the importance of International Artists’ Day. Whether you know a lot or nothing at all about art, visiting an art museum is always a good idea. You can even take a virtual art tour. Maybe sign up for an art class in your area! Support your local (or not-so-local) artists and pick up one of those gallery paintings you’ve had your eye on. Your interest and desire to recognize their work can have the largest impact of all.
