International Yoga Day: Holistically Aligning the Body, Mind and Soul

International Yoga Day is celebrated today along with the benefits it promotes – spiritually, physically and mentally. Who gets bored of doing the same physical activity all over again? Doing the same exercise can be tiresome for some people; we want to try something new. International Yoga Day was declared because yoga is not only beneficial for exercising alternatives; it also helps gain a sense of well-being and harmony in one’s body, mind and soul.

Back in 2014, the United Nations declared International Yoga Day to bring awareness to the health benefits and importance of the practice. Yoga was first found in India during the 5th century as a traditional meditation exercise. This holistic practice helps to keep the body and mind in alignment as well as strengthen one’s physical health.

International Yoga Day chooses a theme for each year to prioritize how yoga is presented and to bring recognition to the practice. This year, “Yoga for Humanity” was selected as the theme. What is the purpose of this year’s theme? “Yoga for Humanity” represents the connection of human beings, and humanity must show kindness and the inclusivity of being welcomed. Lately, the world shows more disconnection and hatred toward humanity; there is hate all over the world. The “Yoga for Humanity” theme can help to promote a sense of positivity around the world; people can do yoga to celebrate this theme and make humanity whole without hate and negativity. The United Nations said, “People around the world embraced yoga to stay healthy and rejuvenated and to fight social isolation and depression during the pandemic.”

In my opinion, International Yoga Day should be considered a holiday, so everyone can practice yoga, celebrate the theme and give the community an opportunity to enjoy it on their own time. Everyone needs yoga in their life to practice meditation as an escape from stress. We all need to take breaks from work, and yoga is a perfect way to refresh and reset. For myself, I plan to do yoga to meditate and free my mind from stress. Will you join me?
