We live in a society where stress and anger coexist together. We are more concerned with being heard instead of listening to each other. We prefer to react than reflect. There are better ways to confront conflict and communicate better.

Listening and reflecting are the keys to understanding each other. It is how we avoid miscommunication and aggressive verbal exchanges. It is best to use the word “I” instead of “you,” as it’s a way to less likely blame each other and create a safe space to tell others how you are feeling. Empathy allows you to understand the other person’s point of view and how you can approach them without judgment. Irrational thinking and judgment create verbal issues which may end up hurting the other person as well as yourself.

The benefits of nonviolent communication are compassion, understanding, empathy, and honesty. Whether it is communication with your partner, friend, or family member, it is important to listen and reflect.
