Thankfulness

My favorite holiday is Thanksgiving. Not all the craziness and pre-holiday stress but when the family gathers to eat a wonderful meal and to reflect on what we all have to be thankful for.

In my journey through this life I have realized that my thankfulness is at times in spite of my circumstances and not because of them. Recently I lost my very well-paying job and had to rely on unemployment. I eventually found another job which does not pay as well but the benefits are great, namely the retirement plan. At the age of 60, that was very important to me, so I gladly accepted the job. However, I had to give up my apartment as I could no longer afford it.

In the process of looking for another place to live I kept telling the Lord that all I needed was “a roof over my head.” Eventually, that is exactly what He provided. A roof over my head in a teeny, tiny, run-down apartment. The rent was considerably lower than my previous apartment, but the property had not been taken care of in years, and it was kind of a scary place at first.

Did God hear my prayer? Absolutely! John 16:24 in the Bible says, “Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.” God wants to bless us abundantly, but I did not trust enough to ask for a place where I would be comfortable and able to host my friends and family. I only asked for a “roof over my head,” and that’s exactly what I got.

I have learned a lesson. And in spite of my not-so-pleasant circumstances, I am thankful. Thankful knowing that God heard my prayer and answered it. Thankful for the new community I am living with and getting to know and especially thankful that it’s Thanksgiving. Let’s celebrate today no matter what and above all, be thankful!
