4 Tips to Succeeding with Your New Year’s Resolutions

Jan 1, 2021 | 0 comments

As we end each year, we often reflect on our past experiences—our successes, our achievements, our needs and our mistakes or the things we could have done differently. We may then ask ourselves, “How can I start over in 2021?”

New Year’s resolutions help us focus on our goals as the calendar page is turned. They give us a foundation to evolve into new, improved versions of ourselves. However, we can then encounter roadblocks to staying motivated in the pursuit of our resolutions. We would either forget or fail to accomplish them by the end of December. To prevent steering away from our goals, here are some tips to create a sustainable list of resolutions for 2021!

Tip 1: Establish Your Wants and Needs

Our resolutions should focus on ourselves. If we focus on a goal given to us by another person, we may struggle and lose the motivation to achieve it. Reflect on your 2020 experience and ask yourself questions like:

  • Do I have a bad habit that I want to break?
  • What was the one thing that I could have improved on?
  • What changes could I make for myself?

It could be losing weight, spending more time with your family, or cooking your own meals. However, limit your resolutions to a good amount based on your mindset and limits. If you have too many resolutions, it will become difficult to accomplish all of them.

Tip 2: Draft an Action Plan

Creating an action plan helps you stay focused all year long. For instance, I want to spend less time browsing through social media, so I plan to dedicate an hour each week to turning off my phone and focusing on my hobbies, like drawing or reading. Gradually, I plan to improve my action plan to disconnect for at least 2 hours each week or at least an hour each day. When working on your resolutions, the best way to tackle them is to take it step-by-step. You want to gradually develop a habit without overwhelming yourself or causing you to give up after a few months.

Tip 3: Notate Your Progress

Tracking your journey is a great way to review the results while providing a sense of accomplishment. There are various ways that you can keep track of your progress. You can mark it on your calendar, utilize planner apps, or write it down in a journal. You will feel a sense of fulfillment with your achievements as you review your results at the end of the year. As you mark down your achievements, you develop a drive to keep going.

Tip 4: Seek Motivation

We will come across times where we lose our drive. However, depending on your goals, it is always fun to do it with friends or family. If exercising becomes a struggle, call someone you know to join you for a workout. If you want to have a healthier diet, reach out to that neighbor who enjoys cooking to help you create a healthy and delicious meal. If you want to spend more time away from the internet, invite some friends to go on a walk in the park. There are multiple ways to stay motivated, but when one or more individuals share a similar goal, it becomes much more enjoyable when you work towards it together.
