Looking to Join a Book Club? We are Cultivating a Literature-Loving Space in Our Global Community

I’m Claire Groft, HNC’s Book Club Moderator. The first rule of Book Club: Always talk about Book Club!

Reading is one of my favorite hobbies. Each summer I keep track of the number of books I’ve read to see if I can beat last year’s number; and when I’m not reading, I’m thinking about reading.

When I was offered the opportunity to host HNC’s Book Club, I knew I had to take it – and I’m so glad I did. As a member of Her Nexx Chapter’s community platform, I’ve met and befriended so many amazing women from all over the world! Participating in an online presence of positivity and joyfulness really helped to boost my confidence in hosting Book Club’s first virtual discussion, and I’m so excited to see where our future meetings take us.

Book Club launched in June, and the book of the month was Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens. We had a fantastic discussion about its themes and characters; everyone was so enthusiastic and passionate about sharing their responses to the book! By cultivating a literature-loving space within HNC’s already-diverse community, Book Club is well on its way to curating a list of titles inspired by and representative of women’s strength, resilience, and courage.

July’s book, Haben: The Deafblind Woman Who Conquered Harvard Law, is a memoir written by Haben Girma. Ms. Girma, who grew up in the Eastern African country Eritrea, is a disability rights lawyer, advocate, and public speaker. Hers is a story of remarkable determination, and as she grows up and makes her way in a world mostly unaccommodating for those in the Deafblind community, she writes about her experiences with grace, humility, and humor.

Book Club meets online to virtually discuss and reflect on each month’s choice. This month we’ll delve into The Deafblind Woman Who Conquered Harvard Law on Wednesday, July 28, at 7 pm CT. I am very excited for this month’s meeting – I’ve already started the memoir, and it is good – and if you’re interested, please reach out to me at claire@hernexxchapter.org.

I can’t wait to see everyone at the end of the month!

Her Nexx Chapter invites you to join our free Community where women from around the world are connecting with each other’s stories, exploring different experiences, and transforming ideas.
